Just be up and doing!

Great achievements often require long,tortuous,bitter experiences,powerful
enough to drive one in despair.But one must rise above disappointments,
Neglect and sorrow and renew the pledge of devoted action.There is just no
Choice.We cannot wait for things to happen to us;we must make them happen
 to us.We cannot wait for fortune to smile on us and bless us with a distinguished
result or a rewarding job.We must act and compel fortune to smile on us.
“Few ever win who wait”,says the poet,and who won’t concede he is right?
                                      Sure there is lots of trouble,
                                      Sure there are heaps of cares,
                                      Burdens that bend us double,
                                      Worries that come to wear.
                                      But we must keep pursuing
                                      Something,and see it through;
                                      Still to be up and doing
                                      Is all that there is to do.

Words of Master Mahashay... Sri Mahendra Nath Gupta (Author of Kathamritra)

"One who has an unshakable faith in Thakur is in one’s last birth. Thakur 
came just for this, just to say so. Said he [Thakur], ‘I swear unto you, 
whosoever will think on me shall inherit my wealth just like a son inherits 
his father’s wealth. My wealth constitutes jnana, bhakti, discrimination, 
dispassion, peace, happiness, prema and samadhi.’ 

"But, it is very difficult to recognize him [Thakur]. He has hidden himself 
behind so many coverings. He was poor, almost illiterate and then a priest. 
Who is capable of recognizing him under so many coverings? Only those who 
have accumulated by the efforts done in the past lives will advance towards 
him unknowingly. ‘Without seeing, without hearing the mind has merged itself 
in him?’ The state of an earnest devotee is the same as that of a ship being 
attracted by a mount of magnet. All desires fall off." 

"The idea that all beings in this vast world are the forms of the Lord, I am 
also one of His forms, Sachchidananda. If one takes to this idea - all work, 
meditation, moving about, everything indeed is done in the presence of God. 
By doing so, our smallness will end. The little ‘I’ will be dissolved in the 
virat (immense) — ‘I am that Sachchidananda.’ 

"The sadhus live in the math. They think on God day and night. That is why, 
the math is a holy place. The same way God is there in the universe. He 
Himself has become all. Besides, He resides in every being as the antaryamin 
(the controller within). Because of this, the universe is also a great holy 
place of pilgrimage. 

"This process is known as sublimation — to dissolve the smaller into the 
bigger to make it big. ‘I am the child of God,’ one must become God’s child 
by thinking so — both in qualities as well as in actions. However, in 
appearance one remains a human being. I am the child of man — this base 
feeling should be transformed into the great feeling of ‘I am the child of 
God.’ This is what is called religion."

One year after joining the Ramakrishna Order at Belur Math I was posted at our Hyderabad centre in March 1977. Since then till April 1996 I was very fortunate to be under the loving care of Rev. Ranganathanandaji Mj. Especially from 1987 onwards I had a rare privilege of accompanying him wherever he traveled, first as a sevak and later as his secretary.

His magnetic personality attracted people from different strata of society, giving them inspiration, joy and encouragement. Wherever he went the place would become a center of festivity.  In one of his lectures, “Ecstasy in Daily Life” he quotes this stanza: “Nitya utsavam bhavatyesham nityasri nityamangalam yesyam hridistho bhagavan mangalaayatano harih …”
“In those whose heart the infinite Lord, Hari who is the ocean of auspicious, is established, for such people everyday is a festival, every day is a good fortune, and every day is full of welfare.”

As he himself established Sri Ramakrishna and Swamiji in his heart for him every day was a joyous and auspicious day—a veritable festival. He never liked people replying, “Somehow going on”, when they were asked, “How are you doing?” The reply should be always positive.

Wherever he went he spread the messages of Sri Ramakrishna, Vivekananda and Vedanta and he stressed these messages are purifying, strengthening and universal. I believe he himself was the embodiment of purity, strength and universality. So from these points I would like to narrate some of his memoirs.


Purity may manifest itself in various forms like compassion, simplicity, humility, and openness etc.


Everybody can feel for others but only a few can really mitigate their sufferings. Rev. Maharaj used to help many needy people and also institutions doing good work. The number of such people and institutions are innumerable. Many people appealed to him for help. His responses to their request were quite quick. An example comes to my mind:

 I have quite often heard from him about the service in leprosy colony in Delhi started by women devotees. Someone told him the plight of the women in that colony, especially a mother giving birth in the gutter. He felt so sorry for that and immediately motivated some ladies and organized a group. They were able to provide the needed service in the colony which is still running to-day. Thus he could motivate people and organize such service institutions or groups wherever he went apart from the Mission itself doing such works.

I remember another example of his concern for women Rev. Maharaj had shown. After Maharashtra earthquake the Mission decided to build houses for the affected people. Rev. Maharaj was keenly interested in the work. When the building plan was made Rev. Maharaj came to know that the house to be built had no toilet. Rev. Maharaj felt very sorry for that and dictated me to write to the Swami concerned to supply a toilet in each house and added, “if you do not build a toilet for them, I will weep. Think of the plight of mothers and sisters when they are suffering from stomach troubles where they will go or at night or on rainy/stormy days how they can go out to answer the call of nature”. I was very much touched by Rev. Maharaj’s concern for women.

Rev. Maharaj’s concern for servants’ welfare too is worthy to be mentioned. It was 1950s in New Delhi, I believe, Rev. Maharaj decided to supply fans for servant quarters. But some feudalistic people in the ashrama thought why we should give fans to servants. But Rev. Maharaj was quite firm in his decision as he really felt the suffering of others. Wherever he went he treated his servants quite well.

Many students and poor people were helped financially by Rev. Maharaj directly or indirectly. But the following case is worth mentioning:

While Rev. Maharaj was in New Delhi he organised a charity concert by Smt. M. S. Subbulakshmi in New Delhi in which Prime Minister J. Nehru was the guest of honour. The money collected was utilised for the construction of the Ashrama auditorium. Since then Rev. Maharaj was quite close to Smt. M. S. Subbulakshmi. Whenever she visited Hyderabad centre she used to sing in the temple or in Rev. Maharaj’s room for half an hour. She did several charity concerts for our Missions and also had given the royalties of her chanting and Bhajan to the Mission. She never charged for her singing and helped many institutions to raise funds through her concert. So when he heard that she was in financial difficulty he felt very sorry for her. He said, “It’s very bad. She has done a lot of service to the society.” He immediately arranged to create a fund under the name “Holy Mother’s Blessing Fund” in Belur Math Head Quarters and from that fund some amount used to be sent to her monthly. After a few years she informed Rev. Maharaj that her financial condition had improved and thanked Rev. Maharaj and also requested him to stop sending the money.


Swami Vivekananda said, “As I grow older, I find that I look more and more for greatness in little things. I want to know what a great man eats and wears, and how he speaks to his servants”. Simplicity is the sign of greatness. Rev. Maharaj ate what he could digest that too minimum necessity, yet he was always full of energy; He was quite happy with old, sometimes worn-out clothes and always treated servants with respect and care.

During meal time at Hyderabad Math he used to tell many stories—including his memoirs of Mysore, Bangalore, Burma, Karachi and New Delhi centres, etc. On such occasions we could catch a glimpse of his childlike simple and innocent nature in spite of his towering intelligence and high position. After he was proposed to be a Vice-President of the Order we inmates of the Hyderabad Math were very eager to know who would be one of the vice-presidents though we expected Rev. Maharaj to become one. After his return from Belur Math in the dining hall one of the inmates asked him who was selected to be a vice President. Then Rev. Maharaj remained silent for a while and hesitatingly said, “I feel a bit shy to tell”. Such was his lovable nature.

His life style too was very simple. His requirements were very little—nothing more than daily necessities. He never wasted things. He used to use his things till they became not fit to use. Sometimes we saw him wearing torn undershirts without allowing us to throw them away. His shoulder bag was used till the leather was worn out and its belt gave way, though many times some people wanted to purchase a new one for him. He did not have attachment to material goods, never bothered whether things are of good quality or expensive. Many a time he received nice shawls but he would give them to someone immediately, though he was using an old shawl with a small hole or two in it. One such example was when he received a shawl on the occasion of Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration. He immediately gave it to the monk in-charge of Narainpur where the Award money too was donated.

Many people think that they have their own missions in life. Rev. Maharaj was known as the foremost orator in India and mingled with powerful and famous people. Any other person would have been easily carried away by this kind of name and fame, but he ever remained as a humble servant of Sri Ramakrishna and Swamiji. Rev. Maharaj used to tell, “We do not have any mission. Sri Ramakrishna and Swamiji had the mission. We are but their instruments”. He also used to tell jokingly, “Do you know everybody has two corpuscles but I have three corpuscles? If you cut my arm you will find in blood; red, white and Swami Vivekananda corpuscles”. His life was really centred in Sri Ramakrishna and Swamiji—Ramakrishna-Vivekananda gataprana.

He never liked secrecy. Rev. Maharaj used to quote Buddha’s saying “Tathagata does not have secrecy. Secrecy belongs to only three people -- Brahmin, thief and prostitute.” He stressed that sadhus should be open to all, no secrecy should be there. And he used to narrate how people fall down from high ideals because of secrecy. His life was impeccable, always open. When he was in Hyderabad his door was always open. Everybody could approach him. That is why everybody could find a friend in him.

Swami Vivekananda tells strength is the message of the Upanishads. Strength comes from the understanding and realization that I am Atman, not this body or mind. To him that was the core idea of practical Vedanta. Rev. Ranganathanandaji fully understood this great message and preached this message of strength in the most practical way giving us an example for applying it in day to day life. After hearing him or reading his books many lives have been changed.

At Hyderabad I had heard from several people saying how their attitude towards life completely transformed for the better, after attending Rev. Maharaj’s talks. They were told by their friends to attend Rev. Maharaj’s Gita talks but at first they were not willing to do so. Most of them thought religious talks were boring or not applicable to them. Later somehow they were persuaded by their friends and willy-nilly attended his talk. For most of them attending his talk once was enough to open their eyes to understand how to live a real meaningful life and face the challenge of life positively. Similar reactions happened in many other places all over the world.

I want to mention two such examples. Rev. Maharaj used to talk about one such case that happened in Rangoon. There was a medical doctor whose wife used to attend Rev. Maharaj’s Sunday lecture but the doctor never attended. One evening somehow the wife persuaded him to attend the talk. So he came with her. After the lecture both of them met Rev. Maharaj. The doctor told him, “Maharaj, I did not know the Gita had such wonderful ideas which are relevant to our present life. From now on I shall surely attend your talk whether my wife may attend or not.” When Rev. Maharaj went to Karachi to take charge of the centre there, he met this doctor again. Then he told Rev. Maharaj, “Maharaj, do you know how much suffering we had to undergo while evacuating from Burma. Many times negative thoughts came across my mind but your Gita lectures sustained me to go through that ordeal. I was really saved by your inspiring and encouraging message.”

Another example is that of one housewife or maid servant in rural Bengal. When Rev. Maharaj went to give initiation in Kalyani and Krishnnagar in Bengal he spoke on Swamiji in Bengali. After returning to Hyderabad Rev. Maharaj received a postcard, in which this woman wrote that she was most ordinary woman doing household work and before she never felt confidence in herself. But after listening to Rev. Maharaj’s talk she felt strength coming in her mind. She came to believe that she could do something. She could be someone. Rev. Maharaj was very happy to receive this postcard.

We read in the Chandogya Upanishad:

Yadeva vidyayaa karoti sraddhayopanisadaa tadeva veeryavattaram bhavati iti:
“Only that which is done with knowledge, faith and concentration, that alone becomes more powerful.”
Whatever Rev. Maharaj did he kept this thought in his mind and practiced it. So his whole being was a powerful dynamo. He could transmit this powerful energy to others or help others kindle Atmashraddha—conviction in oneself.


Swami Vivekananda in one of his letters to Shasi Maharaj wrote, “…Everything must be sacrificed, if necessary, for that one sentiment, universality. Whether I live or die, whether I go back to India or not, remember this specially, that universality--perfect acceptance, not tolerance only--we preach and perform.”

Swami Ranganathanandaji’s speech had universal appeal. Deeply based on Sri Ramakrishna, Swamiji and Vedanta he could speak on any topic. As the title of one of his books suggests he always stressed on “Eternal Values” which are acceptable to all people irrespective of religion, race or caste. So he had friends all over the world. I can narrate a few examples:

A Kolkata Ladies Group once organised a dialog between H. H. Dalai Lama and Rev. Maharaj. H.H. Dalai Lama was quite impressed by Rev. Maharaj. So when he founded a Peace Foundation after receiving a Nobel Peace Prize, he requested Rev. Maharaj to be one of the patrons of the Foundation.

At Hyderabad sometimes we saw Christian nuns attending his Gita talks. The archbishop of Hyderabad at that time knew that Rev. Maharaj’s talks would benefit nuns so they were allowed to attend his talks. Once three nuns came to see Rev. Maharaj. They had read his booklet, “Role and Responsibility of Teachers in Building up Modern India” and were very much impressed, so they wanted to thank him and came to seek his advice.

One wing commander of Indian Air Force came to meet Rev. Maharaj one day. He was a Christian and had some mystical experience. After studying Indianised Christianity under Father Bede Griffith he wanted to study Vedanta. Then Rev. Ranganathanandaji appeared in his dream. So he came to see him. He became very close to Rev. Maharaj and used to address him as my Father.

Among his admirers there were quite a few Muslims. One such was Justice B. of Supreme Court. Once Rev. Maharaj was invited to speak to Supreme Court judges at a parlour meeting. Rev. Maharaj started his talk jokingly whether all the bench were present; then he asked whether Superior Court people also present, hinting the wives of judges. As usual they were very much impressed Rev. Maharaj’s speech. Justice B. was very pleased with Rev. Maharaj’s presentation and became an ardent admirer of Rev. Maharaj.

When he was in Karachi even communists once requested Rev. Maharaj to speak at their place.

He could attract people from various strata of society. He could speak to the professors of University with ease and at the same time he could speak to students or workers or even auto-rickshaw drivers. Whosoever once heard him, they were captured by the charm, power and beauty of his speech. Not only his speech but his life too was very inspiring. He was a friend of all. One of the favorite Sanskrit words of Swamiji was “ajatashatru”; the literal meaning is one who does not have enemy. But he used to explain, “Friend is ordinary because he may have enemies, but this word ajatashatru means one is so great that his enemy is not yet born. None will become his enemy”. I believe his character was such, every body loved him and none became his enemy.

I shall end this memoir with my own experience.

While I was a pujari at Hyderabad Centre a group of Bengali devotees visited our Sri Ramakrishna temple. As Rev. Maharaj was very much particular about maintaining silence in the temple, I followed the instruction. Upon entering in the temple they started talking loudly. I was in the Thakur’s bedroom. They continued in this manner for some time so I came out and requested them to maintain silence. But they replied that nobody was there except them, so what harm was there in their talking in the temple. Hearing this answer I told them rather harshly to keep quiet as sometimes others might be meditating behind the shrine. Then they became quiet.

I had completely forgotten the matter but after a month or two suddenly Rev. Ranganathanandaji called me and told me that some devotees complained to the President of the Order that they were scolded by a brahmacharin while visiting our Hyderabad temple. He questioned me whether it was true or not. I explained him in detail, all that had happened. After hearing everything Rev. Maharaj searched a file and took out a paper in which the following poem was written:

Speak Gently

            Speak gently; it is better far
To rule by love than fear

Speak gently; let no harsh words mar
The good we might do here.

Speak gently to the little child
Its love be sure to gain,
Teach it in accents soft and mild
It may not long remain,

Speak gently to the aged one,
Grieve not the careworn hear;
The sands of life are nearly run,
Let such in peace depart.

Speak gently, kindly to the poor;
Let no harsh tone be heard.
They have enough they must endure
Without an unkind word.

Speak gently to the erring; know
They must have toiled in vain;
Perchance unkindness made them so,
Oh, win them back again

He asked me to read it. After my reading the poem he narrated how he was reprimanded by his purvashrama mother for using foul language when he was young. She told Rev. Maharaj, “My boy, your tongue is the abode of Mother Saraswati so we should never soil it by using foul language”. From then on Rev. Maharaj stopped using foul language and advised me to do the same, especially stressing the sentiment written in the above poem.

Through his life he taught us a great lesson to be a real sannyasi. He was a true sannyasi, free from attachment, ever content, always helpful to others and very dignified-Yati Raja. I always remain grateful to him for showering me with abundant love and care and giving me opportunity to render a bit of service to him.

He will not allow even the slightest ego to remain within you.
The sufferings and difficulties you are undergoing are intended
to make you realize that
you have no independent will of your own.
It is all given over to the Lord.

The moment doubt arises, immediately think of the Lord
and be convinced that whatever takes place by His will
is always for your good.
Whatever happening is happening at His command,

Keep going, keep going this is our mantra. Never stopping and never tiring, we keep steadfastly moving forward.
Our inspiration is the sun, whose chariot moves steadfastly. It has been duty-bound through the ages, yet it has an everlasting intense energy. Movement is my Dharma, going from place to place.
Our inspiration is Shri Guruji, on whose path we are to tread. All Hindus are brothers – we have to tell this to the world. We should remember the great deeds of Shri Guruji and give more time to his mission
Our inspiration is the Bharat, the land we worship. It is the source of many good things and a constant source of love. We should make our life worthwhile by living for this mother of ours

Me- I can’t find free time. Life has become hectic.

KRISHNA : Activity gets you busy. But productivity gets you free.

Me : Why has life become complicated now?

KRISHNA : Stop analyzing life. Just live it. It makes it complicated.

Me : Why are we then constantly unhappy?

KRISHNA : Worrying has become your
habit. That’s why you are not happy.

Me: Why do good people always suffer?

KRISHNA : Diamond cannot be polished without friction. Gold cannot be purified without fire. Good people go through trials, but don’t suffer.
With that experience their life becomes better, not bitter.

Me : You mean to say such experience is useful?

KRISHNA : Yes. In every term, Experience is a hard teacher. She gives the test first and the lessons afterwards.

Me : Because of so many problems, we don’t know where we are heading…

KRISHNA : If you look outside you will not know where you are heading. Look inside. Eyes provide sight. Heart provides d way.

Me : Why does failure hurt
more than moving in the right direction?

KRISHNA : Success is a measure as decided by others. Satisfaction is a measure as decided by you.

Me : In tough times, how do you stay motivated?

KRISHNA : Always look at how far you have come rather than how far you have to go. Always count your blessing, not what you are missing.

Me : What surprises you about people?

KRISHNA : When they suffer they ask, “why me?” When they prosper, they never ask “Why me?”

Me : How can I get the best out of life?

KRISHNA : Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future without fear.

Me : One last question. Sometimes I feel my prayers are not answered.

KRISHNA : There are no unanswered prayers.  Keep the faith and drop the fear.  Life is a mystery to solve, not a

problem to resolve. Trust me. Life is wonderful if you know how to live.

He Who is Alone is Happy. Do Good to All, Like Everyone, But Do Not Love Anyone....

এবার আমার প্রতিশ্রুতি পালনের সময়, ইচ্ছা ও সুযোগ হয়েছে। তাই এ চিঠি লিখতে বসেছি। কিছুকাল আমার শরীরটা খুব দুর্বল ছিল, এবং নানা কারণে এই (জুবিলী) উৎসবের মরসুমে আমার ইংলণ্ড যাওয়া স্থাগিত রাখতে হ'ল ।আমার অকপট ও প্রেমাস্পদ বন্ধুদের সঙ্গে পুনরায় মিলিত হ'তে পারলাম না ব'লে প্রথমটায় মন খুব খারাপ হয়ে গিয়েছিল, কিন্তু দেখলাম কর্মফল এড়াবার জো নেই, তাই আমায় এই হিমালয়কে নিয়েই পরিতুষ্ট থাকতে হ'ল। তবে এ বিনিময়ে মোটেই খুশী হ'তে পারিনি, কারণ মানুষের 
খচ্ছবিতে জীবন্ত আত্মার প্রতিফলনে যে সৌন্দর্য, জড় জগতের যাবতীয় সৌন্দর্যের চেয়ে তা অনেক বেশী আনন্দদায়ক ।
আত্মাই কি জগতের আলোকস্বরূপ নয়?
নানা কারণে লণ্ডনের কাজ একটু ঢিমে-তেতালায় চলেছে; তার একটি মুখ্য কারণ হ'ল-কাঞ্চন, বুঝলে? আমি সেখানে থাকলে টাকাকড়ি যে-কোন উপায়ে জুটে যায়, এবং কাজ আগিয়ে যায়। এখন কেউই কাঁধ পাতছে না। আমাকে আবার যেতেই হবে, এবং কাজটাকে আবার গড়ে তোলার জন্য প্রাণপাত চেষ্টা করতে হবে।
আজকাল বেশ খানিকটা ব্যায়াম করছি ও ঘোড়ার চড়ছি, কিন্তু চিকিৎসকের ব্যবস্থা মতো আমাকে যথেষ্ট পরিমাণে সর-তোলা দুধ খেতে হয়েছিল আর তারই ফলে আমি পিছনের চেয়ে সামনের দিকে বেশী এগিয়ে গিয়েছি। যদিও আমি সবসমই আগুয়ান—কিন্তু এখনই এতটা অগ্রগতি চাই না, তাই দুধ খাওয়া ছেড়ে দিয়েছি।
জেনে খুশী হলাম যে, তোমার খাবার সময় বেশ ক্ষুধা হয়।উইম্বল‍্‍ডনের মিস মার্গারেট নোবল‍্‍কে তুমি জানো কি? সে আমার জন্য কঠোর পরিশ্রম করছে। যদি পারো তো তার সঙ্গে ডাকে যোগাযোগ ক'রো, তা হ'লে সেখানে তুমি আমার কাজে অনেকটা সহয়তা করতে পারবে। তার ঠিকানা—Brantwood, Worple Road, Wimbledon. তা হ'লে আমার ছোট বন্ধু মিস অর্চার্ড (Miss Orchard)কে তুমি দেখেছ এবং তাকে তোমার বেশ ভালও লেগেছে—বেশ কথা। তার সম্বন্ধে আমার অনেক আশা। যখন আমি খুব বুড়ো হ'য়ে যাব, তখন তোমার বা মিস অর্চার্ডের মতো আমার বিশেষ প্রিয় ছোট ছোট বন্ধুদের জয়বার্তা পৃথিবীর বুকে ঘোষিত হচ্ছে দেখে কতই না আনন্দের সঙ্গে জীবনের যাবতীয় কাজকর্ম থেকে চিরদিনের মতো অবসর গ্রহণ ক'রব !
কথায় কথায় ব'লে রাখি, আমার চুল পাকতে শুরু করেছে—এত তাড়াতাড়ি যে বুড়ো হ'তে চলেছি, তাতে আনন্দই হচ্ছে। সোনালীর মধ্যে—অর্থাৎ কালোর মধ্যে—রূপালী কেশ অতি দ্রত এসে যাচ্ছে ।ধর্মপ্রচারকের অল্পবয়সী হওয়া ভাল নয়, তোমার তাই মনে হয় না কি? আমি কিন্তু তাই মনে করি, সারা জীবন ধরেই মনে করেছি। একজন বৃদ্ধের প্রতি মানুষ অনেক বেশী আস্থা রাখে এবং তাঁকে দেখে অনেক বেশী শ্রদ্ধা জাগে। তথাপি এ জগতে বুড়ো বদমাসগুলিই সবচেয়ে মারাত্মক। তাই নয় কি? এই দুনিয়ার বিচারের একটা নিজস্ব নিয়ম আছে, এবং হায়, সত্য থেকে তা কতই না স্বতন্ত্র !
তা হ'লে তোমার 'বিশ্বজনীন ধর্ম' (প্রবন্ধ) রিভিউ দ্য দ্যো মোঁদে(Revue de deux Mondes) পত্রিকা নাকচ ক'রে দিয়েছে। মুষড়ে প'ড়ো না, আবার অন্য কোন কাগজে চেষ্টা কর। আমি নিশ্চিত যে একবার গৃহীত হলে তুমি খুব দ্রুত প্রবেশাধিকার পাবে। আমি খুব আনন্দিত যে কাজটিকে তুমি খুব ভালবাস; কাজ তার নিজের পথ তৈরী ক'রে নেবে, এ বিষয়ে আমার বিন্দুমাত্র সন্দেহ নেই। স্নেহের মেরী, আমাদের ভাবাদর্শের ভবিষ্যৎ উজ্জ্বল, এবং অদূর ভবিষ্যতেই তার সার্থক রূপায়ণ হবে ।
মনে হয় এ চিঠিখানা পারি-তে গিয়ে তোমার সঙ্গে মিলিত হবে—তোমার সৌন্দর্যময় পারি—এবং আশা করি ফরাসী দেশের সাংবাদিকতা ও সেখানকার আসন্ন 'বিশ্ব মেলা' সম্পর্কে তুমি আমাকে অনেক কিছু লিখবে ।
বেদান্তের ও যোগের সাহায্যে তুমি উপকৃত হয়েছ, এ কথা জেনে আমি খুবই খুশী। দুর্ভাগ্যক্রমে মাঝে মাঝে আমার নিজেকে সার্কাস-দলের ক্লাউনের মতো মনে হয়, সে কেবল অন্যকে হাসায়, কিন্তু তার নিজের দশা সকরুণ ।
স্বভাবতই তোমার বেশ হাসিখুশী মেজাজ। তোমার মনে কোন কিছুরই যেন প্রভাব পড়ে না। তা ছাড়া তুমি খুবই পরিণামদর্শী, কারণ খুব সাবধানে তুমি 'প্রেম' বা প্রেমঘটিত যাবতীয় বাজে জিনিস থেকে নিজেকে সরিয়ে রেখেছ। তা হলেই দেখতে পাচ্ছ, তুমি শুভকর্ম করেছ এবং তোমার জীবনব্যাপী কল্যাণের বীজ বপন করেছ। আমাদের জীবনের ত্রুটি হ'ল এই যে, আমরা বর্তমানের দ্বারাই নিয়ন্ত্রিত হই—ভবিষ্যতের দ্বারা নয়। যা এই মুহূর্তে আমাদের ক্ষণিক আনন্দ দেয়, আমরা তারই পিছনে ছুটি; ফলে দেখা যায়, বর্তমানের ক্ষণিক আনন্দের বিনিময়ে আমরা ভবিষ্যতের বিপুল দুঃখ সঞ্চার ক'রে বসি ।
যদি ভালবাসবার মতো কেউ আমার না থাকত! যদি আমি শৈশবেই মাতৃপিতৃহীন হতাম! আমরা আপনার লোকেরাই আমার পক্ষে সবচেয়ে বেশী দুঃখের কারণ হয়েছে—আমার ভ্রাতা, ভগ্নী, জননী ও অন্য সব আপন জন। আত্মীয়স্বজনরাই মানুষের উন্নতির পথে কঠিন বাধাস্বরূপ। আর এটা খুব আশ্চর্য নয় কি যে, মানুষ তৎসত্ত্বেও বিবাহ করবে ও নূতন মানুষের জন্ম দিতে থাকবে !!!
যে মানুষ একাকী, সেই সুখী। সকলের কল্যাণ কর, সকলকে তোমার ভাল লাগুক, কিন্তু কাউকে ভালবাসতে যেও না। এটা একটা বন্ধন, আর বন্ধন শুধুই দুঃখ ডেকে আনে। তোমার অন্তরে তুমি একাকী বাস ক'র—তাতে সুখী হবে। যার দেখাশুনো করবার কেউ নেই এবং কারও তত্ত্বাবধান নিয়ে যে মাথা ঘামায় না, সেই মুক্তির পথে এগিয়ে যায়।
তোমার মনের গঠন দেখে আমার ঈর্ষা হয়—শান্ত, নম্র, হাসিখুশী অথচ গভীর ও বন্ধনহীন। তুমি মুক্ত হয়ে গেছ, মেরী, তুমি মুক্ত হয়ে আছ; তুমি তো জীবন্মুক্ত। আমার প্রকৃতিতে পুরুষের চেয়ে মেয়েদের গুণ বেশী, আর তোমার মধ্যে মেয়েদের চাইতে পুরুষের গুণ বেশী। আমি সবসমই অন্যের দুঃখবেদনা শুধু-শুধুই নিজের মধ্যে টেনে নিচ্ছি, অথচ কারও কোন কল্যাণ করতেও পারছি না—ঠিক যেমন মেয়েদের সন্তান না হ'লে একটি বেড়াল পুষে তার প্রতি সকল ভালবাসা ঢেলে দেয়।
তোমার কি মনে হয়, তার মধ্যে কোন আধ্যাত্মিকতা আছে? একদম না, এগুলি হ'ল জড় স্নায়বিক বন্ধন—হ্যাঁ, ঠিক তাই। হায়, পঞ্চভূতে গড়া এই দেহের দাসত্ব ঘোচানো, সে কি সহজ কথা !
তোমার বন্ধু মিসেস মার্টিন প্রতি মাসে অনুগ্রহ ক'রে তাঁর পত্রিকাটি আমাকে পাঠাচ্ছেন, কিন্তু মনে হচ্ছে, স্টার্ডির থার্মোমিটার এখন শূন্য ডিগ্রীর নীচে। এই গ্রীষ্মে আমার ইংলণ্ডে যাওয়া হ'ল না ব'লে তিনি খুবই নিরাশ হয়ে পড়েছেন। আমার কিই বা করার ছিল ?
আমরা এখানে দুটি মঠের পত্তন করেছি—একটি কলকাতায়, অপরটি মান্দ্রাজে। কলকাতার মঠটি (একটি জীর্ণ ভাড়াটে বাড়ি) সাম্প্রতিক ভূমিকম্পে ভয়ানক আন্দোলিত হয়েছে ।
আমরা বেশ কয়েকটি যুবককে পেয়েছি, তাদের এখন শিক্ষানবিশী চলছে।তা ছাড়া আমরা বিভিন্ন জায়গায় দুর্ভিক্ষপীড়িতদের জন্য সেবাকেন্দ্র খুলেছি, এবং কাজ দ্রুতগতিতে চলছে। ভারতের বিভিন্ন স্থানে আমরা সে-রকম কেন্দ্র স্থাপন করার চেষ্টা ক'রব ।কয়েকদিন বাদেই আমি সমতলে যাচ্ছি এবং সেখান থেকে যাব—এই পর্বতের পশ্চিম খণ্ডে। সমভূমিতে যখন একটু ঠাণ্ডা পড়বে, তখন দেশময় একবার বক্তৃতা দিয়ে বেড়াব—দেখব কি পরিমাণ কাজ করা যায়।
এখন আর লিখবার সময় নেই, অনেক লোক অপেক্ষা করছে—তাই স্নেহের মেরী, তোমার জন্য সর্ববিধ আনন্দ ও সুখ কামনা ক'রে আজ এখানেই শেষ করছি। হাড়মাসের দেহ কখনও যেন তোমাকে প্রলুব্ধ করতে না পারে, সতত এই প্রার্থনা ।

I have time, will, and opportunity now to clear my promise. So my letter begins. I have been very weak for some time, and with that and other things my visit to England this Jubilee season had to be postponed.
I was very sorry at first not to be able to meet my nice and very dear friends once more, but Karma cannot be avoided, and I had to rest contented with my Himalayas. It is a sorry exchange, after all; for the beauty of the living spirit shining through the human face is far more pleasurable than any amount of material beauty.
Is not the soul the Light of the world?
The work in London had to go slow — for various reasons, and last though not the least was l'argent, mon amie! When I am there l'argent comes in somehow, to keep the mare going. Now everybody shrugs his shoulder. I must come again and try my best to revive the work.
I am having a good deal of riding and exercise, but I had to drink a lot of skimmed milk per prescription of the doctors, with the result that I am more to the front than back! I am always a forward man though — but do not want to be too prominent just now, and I have given up drinking milk.
I am glad to learn that you are eating your meals with good appetite.
Do you know Miss Margaret Noble of Wimbledon? She is working hard for me. Do correspond with her if you can, and you help me a good deal there. Her address is, Brantwood, Worple Road, Wimbledon.
So you saw my little friend Miss Orchard and you liked her too — good. I have great hopes for her. And how I should like to be retired from life's activities entirely when I am very old, and hear the world ringing with the names of my dear, dear young friends like yourself and Miss Orchard etc.!
By and by, I am glad to find that I am aging fast, my hair is turning grey. "Silver threads among the gold" — I mean black — are coming in fast.
It is bad for a preacher to be young, don't you think so? I do, as I did all my life. People have more confidence in an old man, and it looks more venerable. Yet the old rogues are the worst rogues in the world, isn't it?
The world has its code of judgment which, alas, is very different from that of truth's.
So your "Universal Religion" has been rejected by the Revue de deux Mondes. Never mind, try again some other paper. Once the ice is broken, you get in at a quick rate, I am sure. And I am so glad that you love the work: it will make its way, I have no doubt of it. Our ideas have a future, ma chere Marie — and it will be realised soon.
I think this letter will meet you in Paris — your beautiful Paris — and I hope you will write me lots about French journalism and the coming "World's Fair" there.
I am so glad that you have been helped by Vedanta and Yoga. I am unfortunately sometimes like the circus clown who makes others laugh, himself miserable!
You are naturally of a buoyant temperament. Nothing seems to touch you. And you are moreover a very prudent girl, inasmuch as you have scrupulously kept yourself away from "love" and all its nonsense. So you see you have made your good Karma and planted the seed of your lifelong well-being. Our difficulty in life is that we are guided by the present and not by the future. What gives us a little pleasure now drags us on to follow it, with the result that we always buy a mass of pain in the future for a little pleasure in the present.
I wish I had nobody to love, and I were an orphan in my childhood. The greatest misery in my life has been my own people — my brothers and sisters and mother etc. Relatives are like deadly clogs to one's progress, and is it not a wonder that people will still go on to find new ones by marriage!!!
He who is alone is happy. Do good to all, like everyone, butdo not love anyone. It is a bondage, and bondage brings only misery. Live alone in your mind — that is happiness. To have nobody to care for and never minding who cares for one is the way to be free.
I envy so much your frame of mind — quiet, gentle, light, yet deep and free. You are already free, Marie, free already — you are Jivanmukta. I am more of a woman than a man, you are more of a man than woman. I am always dragging other's pain into me — for nothing, without being able to do any good to anybody — just as women, if they have no children, bestow all their love upon a cat!!!
Do you think this has any spirituality in it? Nonsense, it is all material nervous bondage — that is what it is. O! to get rid of the thraldom of the flesh!
Your friend Mrs. Martin very kindly sends me copies of her magazine every month — but Sturdy's thermometer is now below zero, it seems. He seems to be greatly disappointed with my non-arrival in England this summer. What could I do?
We have started two Maths (monasteries) here, one in Calcutta, the other in Madras. The Calcutta Math (a wretched rented house) was awfully shaken in the late earthquake.
We have got in a number of boys, and they are in training; also we have opened famine relief in several places and the work is going on apace. We will try to start similar centres in different places in India.
In a few days I am going down to the plains and from thence go to the Western parts of the mountains. When it is cooler in the plains, I will make a lecture tour all over and see what work can be done.
Here I cannot find any more time to write — so many people are waiting — so here I stop, dear Marie, wishing you all joy and happiness.
